Massage is the practise of soft tissue manipulation for relaxational/therapeutic purposes. It involves manipulating a recipient's body using motion, pressure and tension. There are many methods of massage from around the world and this DVD includes techniques from a number of these. It is, though, predominantly drawn from Swedish Massage.
The Swedish Massage uses five principal strokes or 'styles' which were named by the Dutch practitioner, Johan Georg Mezger. These are are effleurage (light touch), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), petrissage (kneading), friction (compression), and vibration. You will see each of these used in the DVD.
Touch is known to have beneficial effects on health. Medical research has shown that massage can reduce anxiety and depression, and relieve pain. It has also been found to improve sleep.
